India to tour Australia in January 2016
Wed, Jul 08 2015
Australia will host India in five ODIs and three T20Is in January 2016, Cricket Australia announced on Thursday. Australia's cricket board said it wanted to build on the success of the World Cup it co-hosted earlier this year along with New Zealand. Former champions India were beaten by eventual winners Australia in the semi-final in front of a capacity crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
"We want to build on this great momentum," CA executive general manager Mike McKenna said. "Following the World Cup, we are determined that local Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Afghan, Sri Lankan and other overseas-born fans who packed Australia's grounds with good-humoured noise and colour are able to maintain their passion for cricket as part of their adopted Australian lifestyles."
"These teams met in the semi-final of the World Cup in a match which saw more than 300 million fans watching on Star TV in India, and we want to continue to build a strong rivalry which will be on show throughout the summer," McKenna said. McKenna also announced that the Sydney Cricket Ground will host all internationals in New South Wales state. T20s have been staged at Sydney's Olympic stadium since 2010.
The series marks the second consecutive year of India touring Australia. In 2014-15, they played in four Tests followed by a tri-series also featuring England.
The first of the five-match ODIs will be played at the WACA in Perth on January 12. Subsequent games will be played in Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. The three T20Is will be played from January 26 in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
The ODI and T20I series culminates what is an extended summer of cricket in Australia that sees both New Zealand and West Indies play three-match Test series. While the dates for the proposed Chappell-Hadlee series in 2016 have not yet been confirmed, it is likely that the three-match ODI series will be played in New Zealand late in February.
