Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 skipper Kirstan Kallicharan slammed an unbeaten 77 to guide his team to an easy seven-wicket win over the Windward Islands in the third round of the West Indies Cricket Board Under-17 Championships at Canaan Ground in Tobago, yesterday.
Kallicharan slammed one six and nine fours and faced 88 balls to lead the hosts to 176 for three off 38 overs after dismissing the Windwards for 172.
The T&T skipper put on an unbroken 87-run fourth-wicket stand with Saiba Batoosingh to put the chase back on course after losing Cephas Cooper off the fourth ball of the innings for zero.
Keagan Simmons and Crystian Thurton put on 42 for the second wicket to get the innings moving again before the former was caught and bowled for 26 which came off 34 balls and included five boundaries.
Thurton also found the ropes five time before falling for 35 off 68 balls.
Earlier Kallicharan grabbed two wickets for 37 runs off ten overs to help dismiss the Windwards cheaply.
Quammie Mohammed, Justyn Gangoo and Nathaniel McDavid also picked up two wickets each.
Elsewhere, leaders Jamaica stayed on top thanks to a strong all-round performance from their captain Brad Barnes which helped them defy the weather to fashion a 35-run victory over Leeward Islands.
Barnes hit the top score of 58 at better than a run-a-ball to prop up the batting of his side, who were bowled out for 197 in 32.4 overs in the rain-marred, third round match at Louis D’Or, before he returned to grab two wickets to earn the Jamaicans a crucial victory that kept them unbeaten in the tournament.
In the other match yesterday, left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd followed the lead of his captain Rolando Alimohamed and former Under-15 captain Bhaskar Yadram, as Guyana dealt a further blow to the hopes of defending champions Barbados with a 66-run victory in another rain-affected contest at Shaw Park.
The results meant that Jamaica opened a gap of no less than six points on T&T, who have now taken control of second place in the tournament, narrowly ahead of Windwards, with the Barbadians, Guyanese and Leewards trailing the pack.
The players take a break today but the tournament resumes tomorrow with T&T facing old rivals Barbados at Louis D’Or, Guyana meeting the Leewards at Canaan and Jamaica tackling Windwards at Shaw Park.
