Editorial: Losing faith in Dave Cameron

(JAMAICA GLEANER) When Dave Cameron's leadership of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) was under attack earlier this year, this newspaper felt the basis of the assault was unfair - and said so. He was being blamed for the fallout from the West Indies team's walkout of their tour of India when the players' real grouse was, or ought to have been, with their union, the West Indies Players' Association.

Mr Cameron's incumbency was extended for a second two-year term with his defeat of Joel Garner's challenge for the presidency in March. Neither candidate, in our view, offered a compelling intellectual vision of West Indies cricket. They spoke ephemerally about returning the team to its dominance of the 1970s and '80s, without a strategic path by which it was to be accomplished.

We are beginning to sense that he may definitely not be up to the task. The problem, we perceive, is that he sees the solution to the crisis in West Indies cricket only in terms of earning more money from the game, which, of course, is important. But there has to be an intellectual foundation upon which any sustainable resurgence of West Indies cricket is constructed. And Dave Cameron appears to lack ideology - of whatever stripe - or any sense of history, exemplified by his vote to cede, in exchange for some cash, the control of international cricket to India, Australia and England.

Our concern over this aspect deepened during the recent two-Test series between the West Indies and Australia, which culminated at Sabina Park a week ago, with a second humiliating defeat for the regional team. That loss -save for a few weeks - coincided with the 20th anniversary of the decline of West Indies cricket, which began with the historic defeat by the Aussies in 1995 at the Kingston cricket ground.

Neither at the start of the most recent series, nor at its end, did Mr Cameron and his board see an even symbolic platform from which they could articulate a context for the regional game's resurgence. This is an inadequacy that exacerbates what we fear is the start of the dismantling of the idea upon which cricket's high-performance centre in Barbados was built.

NOT IN AGREEMENT

We are not in agreement with the ideological frame in which Professor Hilary Beckles perhaps still hopes contemporary West Indian society should be constructed. We, however, are at one with him on the social and political forces, in the period of colonial and Caribbean nationalism, that inspired the ascendancy of West Indies cricket. We are also in agreement with his prescription, enunciated two decades ago, for its rebirth in this period of globalisation.

In offering a blueprint for what became the high performance, Professor Beckles, in the second volume of his book, The Development of West Indies Cricket, said the objective would be to "advance the cricketer's mentality by two decades with respect to information technology, strategic planning, psychological dexterity and financial organisation".

These are the kinds of gaps, it has become increasingly obvious, that exist between contemporary West Indian teams and their better-performing counterparts. Their teams are far more socially and psychologically mature than ours. Yet earlier this year, the WICB substituted the programmatic approach of the high-performance centre for short-term initiatives. The deeper development, a board official suggested, would be left to teams.

West Indies cricket needs a new paradigm.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

these guys are sweet...their hypocrisy knows no end.

the Gleaner knows whats going orn and wat is needed in correction.

these west indian islands need a real developing nation to prepare the west indian people for life including cricket.  if not we will always have immature teams and people in everything we do...2 decades behind the rest of the world

same way the Gleaner knows why Dave Cameron is wicb chair.  they are disappointed in Dave and feels he is not up to the task.

there has been no black/brown wicb chair up to the task since these took over in 1995.

not one of them had/has the ideological component the Gleaner now finds essential but glaringly lacking. and those in power in the region want it so..that is why those men have been 'selected' not elected to lead the cricket.

if the west indies and its leadership seriously wanted a strong cricket team the region would have put the men in place who were capable of producing such a result. but they don't..and allowed a parasitic bureaucracy to be evolved at cricket HQ

but the gleaner knows all of this. the gleaner too is part and parcel of the west indian system living fat of exploitative privilege on the backs of the west indian people.. the Gleaner therefore is hypocrite..and 'exposing' what they say above at this late stage is not to foster change but to excuse it.

this is propaganda..a kind of pre-emption..taking in front before the front takes you.  it is better an established rag take the lead in critique lest it emerges from sections of the society that do indeed want change and are quite serious about it.  they don't want that.  they want everything to remain the same

what the gleaner say here and nothing is the same thing. they cannot possibly be sincere.  they are playing games with us

Cameron has a bureaucracy to feed which is why he sold out at the ICC in return for cash to pay his staff.

CAMERON HAS GONE THE WAY OF MONEY BECAUSE HE IS NEO LIBERAL IN IDEOLOGY..MONEY IS EVERYTHING..PRIVATIZATION THE NAME OF THE GAME

BUT THAT IS THE WAY THEY ALL ARE INCLUDING THE GLEANER...NEO LIBERAL..AND HILARY BECKLES TOO

THESE GUYS SIMPLY DO WHAT THEY ARE TOLD..AND THEY ARE UP THERE BECAUSE THEY LIKE THE NEO LIBERAL SYSTEM AND CAN FUNCTION SWEETLY IN IT.  THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE THAT SYSTEM CRITICIZE IT AND GO MAKE THEIR LIVING ELSEWHERE

ALL THE TIME THE WICBC....MORPHED INTO WICB... DOING ITS THING AT FACTORY ROAD THE GLEANER NEVER SEE ::confused:: ::confused:: ::confused::

IT TAKES THEM 20 YEARS TO SEE THAT THERE IS NO IDEOLOGICAL BASIS TO WEST INDIES CRICKET EQUAL TO ITS NEED..AND SUCH IDEOLOGY COULD ONLY COME FROM A REAL, HONEST TO GOODNESS NATIONAL WICB, OR A REAL WEST INDIAN NATION THAT FEEDS A PROPER NATIONALISM INTO THE PL;AYERS THAT GIVES THEM ALL THEY NEED TO DEAL WITH ALL THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH

MAKE A NATION GLEANER..AND WE MAY SET UP A REAL CRICKET.

And now we may see what I am talking about relative to lloyd..why he is so awful. Lloyd skunt is an old colonial..operates as if things are the same as when he began his career way back in 1967.

Lloyd bounced in and started dropping people, picking others without plan or attention to the state of the game in the region and the quality of players he is dealing with, their ages and state of development and so on.  what I call statesmanship or rather the lack of it. the gleaner calls it the lack of ideology..and they are right.

what you playing for, why yuh have a team, what is the purpose of all this ::confused::

in the first stage it must be a nationalist ideology out of nation state whom the team represents as if the nation is a coordinated unit.  but the nation even as a nation at this stage is divided along class lines..racial lines to.  there are internal struggles to resolve the divisions and in time the nation can become a true unit.

we are not there yet.  the first stage is the nation state to be first codified, yet at once divided and yet a unit like all nations are currently.

west indies needs a nation state of all its constituent parts, developing rapidly, raising the sophistication of its social content to bring our people up to speed with the rest of the world.  as the Gleaner said we are 2 decades behind.  we are not going to make up that without making a west indian nation, beginning a concerted nationalist development on all levels of life

Well the West Indies team situation is bigger than the board management at this stage. The region just don't have the quality players required to compete internationally at the longer formats of the game. If the president were someone else then the team's performance would be no different.

Prime minister Mitchell might be unhappy..but I cant think of a member of the west indian elites I am familiar with,  unhappy in any way about this development..the death of west indian cricket....

ketchim and the Guyanans..Yardies too.. will get their separatist wish by default.  west indies cricket is dead.  what can replace the current configuration for a while at least is T20..now infused with Indian IPL money.

ketchim is right...the old west indies that had a federated nation in mind is dead :( :( :(

long live the west indies

what will rise in its stead ::confused::

intersting!
