The career of 40-year-old West Indies left-handed middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul could come to an abrupt end if an emergency meeting this weekend in Barbados with the Clive Lloyd led selection panel and the WICB President and some of their Directors fails to rescind the somewhat surprising decision to drop the Guyanese from the team to face Australia next Month.
Chanderpaul who made his Test debut at Bourda in 1994 against England is only the ninth player over the age of 40 to play in a Test match for the West Indies.
According to a well placed source Chanderpaul was given the option of retiring when he meet with the selectors this month and refused their offer claiming he was still available for Test cricket resulting in him being dropped. The left-hander from Unity Village in Guyana failed to reach 100 in the three matches against South Africa or in the three that followed in the West Indies against England.
However, the veteran who has played 164 Tests, the most by any West Indian, and has accumulated 11,867 runs at an average of 51.7 and needs 82 more to pass Brian Lara’s most Test runs by a West Indian from 131 Tests and that could have also been a consideration.
Chanderpaul reportedly wanted to continue his Test career but with each failure his average is dipping. Chanderpaul has never gone 12 innings without a half-century and the manner of some of his dismissals suggest that his advancing age played a part in them.
Gordon Greenidge was 40 when he played against Australia in St John’s in April 1991 and was the last West Indies player before Chanderpaul to play past age 40 and age must have been a consideration.
Chairman of the WICB selectors Clive Lloyd was 40 when he played his last Test against Australia at Sydney in 1984 and would be an excellent judge of whether team or individual is more important.
But because of tremendous contribution to West Indies cricket at the highest level over the last 21 years, he should be afforded the opportunity to break Lara’s record against Australia and then be asked to retire or be dropped if he passes Lara’s record or not.

The whole world knows that Shiv failed miserably in his last 2 test series. But after 21 years of outstanding service to West Indies cricket surely the WICB could have given him a farewell test against Australia.

THE REV WILL NEVER ROOT FOR THE WEST INDIES AGAIN.

What a nasty bunch of people---Clive Lloyd, his fellow selectors and the dogs at the WICB.

Shiv plays 21 years for the West Indies and the man cannot be given a farewell test ?

Oh well Shiv has had an outstanding career. He gets dropped after playing 164 tests and scoring 11.867 runs at an average of 51.37 with 30 hundreds and 66 fifties. He is the first Guyanese ever to average 50+ in test cricket---Kanhai, Lloyd, Kali, Fredericks, Sarwan, Hooper---none averaged 50+ in tests.

Your best years are still ahead of you Shiv. They are not on the cricket field but I wish you well in all your endeavors.

LESSON FOR SHIV & EVERYONE ELSE

Life is not fair---you will never get everything you believe you deserve---once you get used to the fact life is not fair---then you can move on and create new opportunities for yourself.

* MAYBE SHIV HAS A FUTURE IN GUYANA POLITICS :D

* One last thing Shiv---don't be bitter---thank your fans for their support---thank the WICB even though they kicked you out in the end----be gracious in your exit.

Nathan Lyon is excited by his return to a happy hunting ground for this week's first Test against the West Indies.

The off-spinner may have only played three Tests in the Caribbean, in 2012, but it was one of his most successful tours for his country.

Lyon picked up 13 wickets as Australia claimed the series 2-0.

Seven of those scalps came in the final Test at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica.

So it was no surprise Lyon wore a big grin as he returned to Windsor Park for Australia's first practice session at the venue ahead of Wednesday's first Test.

"I really enjoyed my time here, it was a great experience," Lyon said.

"It was my first time over here so to come back here, have fond memories, it's really exciting.

"I'm looking forward to getting stuck into them."

Lyon made a steady if unspectacular start to this tour, with two first-innings wickets all he had to show from last week's three-day game in Antigua against a WICB President's XI.

His match haul of 2 for 125 does not look great but the 27-year-old says it was a good hitout and he is comfortable with his form.

"We needed a solid day in the field because a few of us had eight weeks off," Lyon said.

"It was really good to have that long stint in the field.

"I was more worried about how they were coming out of my hand and they were coming out really well so I was quite happy."

Lyon says his role will not change whether he is the sole spinner in the lineup or is picked alongside leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed.

He said uncapped 33-year-old, Pakistani-born Fawad was bowling well and he was confident the pair would work well together if both picked.

"I've got my role in the team and I know what that is," Lyon said.

"No matter what the conditions turn up, I'll try to do my role in the best possible way.

"Fawad's been bowling really well. It's all up to the selectors and captain I guess if they want to go with two spinners or one."

Lyon and his Australian team-mates had their first look at the pitch on Sunday and will train again on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the series opener.

Coach Darren Lehmann has already suggested a final lineup is unlikely to be named until the day of the Test to make the best read on conditions.
