Guyana Times article.
Georgetown, Guyana - Former West Indies Test and ODI batsman, Alvin Isaac Kallicharran, has called for the playing of cricket in schools across the country as he continues to work with the nation’s young cricketers at various venues in the three counties.
Addressing youths at the Enterprise Busta Sports Club on the East Coast of Demerara last Wednesday, the 66-year-old former West Indies captain and dashing middle-order batsman underscored the importance of developing a sound structure in schools, which he said would be the catalyst for development at the club and national level.
“We need to have more cricket being played in schools. School cricket is very important in the process of development, because the talent is there- we just need to nurture it,†Kallicharran said.
During the session at Enterprise, Kallicharran, who scored 12 Test centuries in 66 matches, conducted catching and fielding drills with the youngsters attached to Enterprise Primary School, while he observed the club’s Under-19 cricketers during a session on the pitch.
Kallicharran was assisted by Enterprise Busta Sports Club coaches Latchman Yadram, Seemangal Yadram and Jitlall Jowarhirlall.
Over 80 youngsters, including four females, attended the three and a half hour session, which was facilitated by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB).
Jowarhirlall, who is also Secretary of the Enterprise Busta Sports Club, expressed gratitude to Kallicharran for spending time with the young crop of cricketers. He also lauded the GCB for the initiative.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
