While conducting some research with the
ESPN Statsguru
, I delved into some interesting batting numbers through the years. All numbers are for Test matches only.
The highest batting average by a batsman batting 6 through 11 in the order with a minimum of 20 matches played belongs to Shiv at 61.15. Other batsman with an average above 50 include Sir. Garry, Allan Border, Ian Bell, VVS Laxman and Angelo Mathews. Clive Lloyd just missed out at 48.93. The most centuries by a batsman batting 6 or lower with a minimum of 20 matches belongs to Adam Gilchrist with 15. Botham is second on the list with 11.

By contrast, the lowest batting average by a batsman batting 1 through 5 in the order with a minimum of 20 matches belongs to New Zealand's Noel McGregor at 19.82. Other batsman with an average under 25 include Mike Brearley, Phil Simmons, Bill Athey, Stuart Williams and Devon Smith. Most ducks belong to Marvan Atapattu (21). Fewest scores of 50+ (3) is held by a number of batters including Richie Benaud, Moin Khan and Brian McMillan.

The lowest average for an opening batsman with a minimum of 30 matches played belongs to Bangladesh's Javed Omar at 22.07. Second on the list is Dwayne Smith at 23.88 - who also tops the list for lowest scores of 50+ (6). Daren Ganga is third at 24.79. Most ducks belong to Michael Atherton (17).
Of the 81 opening batsman to play at least 30 matches, Chetan Chauhan is the only batsman to never score a Test century.

Well numbers don't always tell the full story but in cricket they tell more than 2/3 of the story. Cricket is a game that is all about numbers and stats and that is the only way players can be judged for years to come.
