Can't spot a weakness in Australia - Ponting

Ricky Ponting believes Australia are overwhelming favourites to win their fifth World Cup when they take on New Zealand at the MCG on Sunday. Speaking exclusively to ESPNcricinfo, he said he doesn't think Brendon McCullum's men "can win if Australia play as well as they can".

"They are both very good teams, but if you just saw them on paper and if you try and see weaknesses in the Australian team, I am not sure where you find one," Ponting said. "Their top-order batting is brilliant, their new-ball bowling is brilliant, their allrounders are some of the best in the world and they are going to play at the MCG, where they know the conditions really well. That's not saying New Zealand can't win, we have seen how good a brand of cricket they can play, but I've just got a feeling that the Aussies won't let a moment like a World Cup final at home slip."

Ponting has played in five World Cups, reached four finals and won three times, twice as captain, and he believes the opposition's eagerness to do "something extra special" was the reason for them to "come undone" while Australia were focused on playing to the level they were capable of.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Cause Australia is so perfect and mighty right? Ponting is doing what he does best and that is talking trash. I was saying Australia will win but I forgot how cocky they are and as a result I hope New Zealand can pull off the win.

I am not so sure about the cocky. He talked about "on paper" which is fine but the game is not played on paper.

He also said ".....if Australia play as well as they can". Interesting statement because most teams that lose do not play as well as they can. Sometimes teams are not allowed to play as well as they can. AB also said the same thing about SA and they lost so I guess they did did not play as well as they could against NZ.

I have Oz as winners primarily because the game is in Australia but in my mind the sides (on paper) are very close.

I agree Boquie .... AUS are not being cocky ... just confident that they can do it especially on home soil.  Also the way AUS play they do not give up until the final ball....they just need to play their usual way.

However, time for the Kiwis to make history and play their new brand of cricket ........

Good luck to both teams tomorrow ....... while again I'm sitting on the fence for this one as both teams deserve to be in the finals  ... I guess I would like to see the Black Caps underdogs get a WC under their belt.

Let's go ... Game on !!

Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of AT&T Stadium, otherwise known as “Jerry World,” is the glare from the sun that bursts through the windows and shines directly onto the field. Time and time again the glare has impacted players’ visibility during games, yet Jerry Jones refuses to make any changes to account for the sun.

Rather than install curtains, Jones has previously said he feels it’s a home-field advantage to have that type of stadium factor impacting games. Well, the glare ended up benefitting the Chiefs early into Thursday’s Thanksgiving game, as a pass from Dak Prescott to George Pickens fell incomplete, at least in part due to the impact of the sun’s glare.

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team. Let us hope that this effort by West Indies batsmen would not be a one-off performance, but will be the beginning of a renewed effort to improve the performances of the team, going forward.(13.10.2025, 09:28)(09:28)0

WarrenJameis Winston is asked about being named QB3 on the Giants' roster behind Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart:

"As a competitor, you want to be the starter. But I prepare to be the starter, I know I'm a starter in this league.

But you have to be able to be grateful for your role...my role right now is to assist Russ and Jaxson to be the best that they can be while preparing to be the best that I can be.

No matter if I'm 3, 33, this is my first year being number 19, so it's always a first for everything.

I focus on what I would love. And what I would love is for this team to have success."
