They have lost a 50 over series not a test series. Why? They took wrong players for the style of play needed in this format. Of those they did take they too often played the wrong eleven. If Broad and Anderson were their main bowling threat and an excuse for their combined poor performance was they were both coming back from injury why were they playing in the first place? They needed eleven players fit enough for 100% performance.
I was delighted Tredwell was in the squad but disgusted that he never had a chance to further prove his usefulness in one day cricket. I know that comment won't please everyone, however as it seemed unlikely he would ever play why did he get into the squad when in was clear spin bowling would fall to Ali and Root? Just doesn't make sense to me.
Whatever the fall out from this debacle is maybe the selectors can do one thing in future. That is give a newcomer a fair chance which means sticking with him if he fails a couple of times. Too many stay in the team when out of form in the hope it will magically return. I remember the days of Mike Denness dropping himself in an Ashes series as he was out of form only to return later with a big score. Why Morgan played every game is beyond a joke.

Re: Morgan as captain. They waited too long to move away from Cook. That decision should have been made prior to the summer series of ODI's or at the very latest after the series. Not after the Sri Lanka series in December. The only possible replacements for Cook as captain at that late stage were Morgan, Broad, Root or Bell. They publicly felt that Root was too young and did not have enough experience to be captain and Bell, at the time, wasn't even in the team. So they backed themselves into a corner where they replaced one out of touch captain with another. In fact, from January 1, 2014 to January 1, 2015, Morgan's average (25.45 in 23 matches) was lower than Cook's (27.52 in 20 matches).
I agree on Tredders and was happy to see him get a game in the last match. He is England's best economical bowler and although not a big wicket taker, at least keeps pressure on by keeping the runs down. Sadly, the selectors made the decision that they were not going to play two spinners and instead wanted the four prong seam attack resulting in Tredders being a spectator.
I mentioned this in one of the other threads, England have a problem with the lack of quality seam bowlers on the horizon. The cupboard is really barren.
