Chanderpaul Stalking Lara’s Totals
(WESTINDIESFORUM.COM) For over two decades now the world has watched Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the Guyana born cricketer, making a name for himself in the halls of cricket fame
Shiv Chanderpaul is a left-handed batsman who captained 14 West Indies Tests and another 16 ODIs, (One Day Internationals); He also became the first indo-Caribbean to play 100 tests for the West Indies. With over 20,000 total runs completed in international cricket matches, Shivnarine Chanderpaul is casting a shadow over Brian Lara’s impressive record as a cricketer.
Shiv just turned 40 last year in August; nevertheless, but age is not a factor to the West Indies side who badly need his essential skills to maintain their strategic battle operations.
The small left-handed Guyanese will have an impressive record to break if he hopes to over shadow the prowess of the “Prince of Port of Spain†however. Although Shiv has already taken the lead in total test matches, he only has 30 total centuries in Tests and 11 in ODIs to the day. Brian Lara on the other hand leads by 34 test Centuries and 19 ODI Centuries, or a total lead of 12 Centuries.
Not too long ago a reporter with an enlightened perspective on West Indies Cricket was asked if there was a chance that Shivnarine Chanderpaul would ever successfully overtake Brain Lara as the all time run maker in Tests and the response was dismissive. “Well, he might - If he plays till he’s 47.â€
Both Chanderpaul and Lara had the misfortune of being committed to the diminishing progress of a West Indies team. After the world of international cricket had been dominated for almost two decades by the awesome skill of the West Indies; the 90’s brought with them much misguidance that led to an inability to compete against the top teams by the early 2000’s.
The loss to India (2-0) not too long back, was Chanderpaul’s record breaking moment although he only broke Brian’s record for most Test Defeats. He still carries the third best average in the category of batsmen who have 2000 plus run’s in losses, just behind Andy Flower and Brian Lara.
But when it comes to run-getters in Test Defeats; in the top six Shiv Chanderpaul has the largest percentage of runs. He has also performed very well in draws, among batsmen with 3000-plus runs in drawn games he places second to the top behind Kallis.
Since Brian Lara retired back in 2006, most of the batting we have seen from the West Indies has been the talented efforts of Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Although there has never quite been a dominant west indies presence in the Test arena, the battling skills of Chanderpaul have gone a long way in keeping the West Indies competitive.
Chanderpaul's performance in the recent series against Australia is a fine example of this, scoring over 300 runs and being dismissed a mere 3 times and still maintaining an impressive average. Although the methods and techniques of the left-handed Chanderpaul may seem unorthodox and certainly not the most stylish performance there is little doubt that they are surprisingly effective.

Well Chanderpaul is a good batsman but he will not over take Brian Lara on runs. Chanderpaul has always been a slow scorer and maybe that is what has cost him the opportunity to be the leading run scorer for the West Indies in test cricket.

Well there is, perhaps sadly, no one challenging Shiv for his test place.
So he could be around for a few years more.

Second that.
The harsh reality.had his slot been a challenge for himself,it could have evoked better a team. The fight for slot within the team would have been healthy and could have made WI a great team.
OK...STOP DREAMING..

“I have been playing for so long and I want to win. As much as I do well personally, I want to win as a team as well.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
