Kingston, Jamaica - Teenage fast bowler Marquino Mindley has expressed surprise at being named in the West Indies' preliminary 30-man squad for next February's ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The 19-year-old, who made his first-class debut while representing Jamaica Franchise three weeks ago, is among a list of 10 pace bowlers that have been included in the unit, which is set to be cut to 15 for the showpiece event.
"It (selection) is a surprise to me as I did not expect such a call-up this year," said Mindley.
"But it's a very good feeling, and I am happy that it has come."
Starting his career against the Windwards Volcanoes at Sabina Park, Mindley, who spearheaded the West Indies' Under-19 bowling attack at the ICC Youth World Cup earlier this year, has so far taken nine wickets at the first-class level.
This is at an average of 19.00, and economy rate of 2.64.
He took five for 35 and none for 28 against the Windwards, one for none away to Barbados Pride in a rain-affected encounter, and followed up with two for 28 and none for 20 against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force at Queen's Park Oval.
The slender built seamer, whose main assets have been bowling a consistent line and length, and getting the ball to swing in and out, also claimed one for 16 and none for 44 against Leewards Hurricanes earlier this week.
"I am yet to play regional one-day cricket as yet, but I guess the selectors see the potential in me," Mindley commented.
"One-day cricket is more intense, but for me bowling line and length never changes.
"I am therefore looking to continue to work hard, and put in the training. If I get to play in the Super50 I hope to do well."
The second West Indies Cricket Board NAGICO Insurance Super50 is scheduled to be staged in Trinidad next month.
West Indies are set to face reigning champions India, Ireland, Pakistan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Associate Member country United Arab Emirates in Pool B of the World Cup.
