Guyana born Head Curator at Lords presents ‘piece of Turf’ to GCC

Georgetown, Guyana - Yesterday the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) at Bourda was presented with a piece of hallowed Turf from the square of the Lords Cricket ground in London by England Guyanese born Omesh Mohamed who migrated to the United Kingdom when he was three years old.

According to his father Prem Raghubeer, the 31-year-old Omesh is the Head Curator at Lords and wanted to do something for a club that his grandfather, Deopaul Raghubeer is a life member of.

Deopaul Raghubeer presents the Turf from the ‘square’ at Lords along with a wicket, ball and bat ornament to GCC President Lionel Jaikarran on behalf of his grandson Omesh Mohamed, the Head Curator at Lords.

Carl Hooper and Shiv Chanderpaul are the only batsmen from GCC, who have scored Test centuries at Lords and yesterday the presentation was made to GCC President Lionel Jaikarran by Omesh’s grandfather in the presence of his father.

GCC is the venue for the West Indies’ first ever Test match win against England in 1930 but the venue, which hosted 32 Tests between 1930 and 2005, is no longer used for Test cricket since construction of the National Stadium at Providence.  Omesh is on his third trip to Guyana but was unavoidably absent yesterday.
