The West Indies team has never enjoyed a great equation with its parent body - the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) - and on Monday the internal squabbling between them came to the fore.
The team, currently in India for a full-fledged tour of five ODIs, three Tests and a Twenty20 International, has decided that the day before the first ODI is the right time to revolt against their board and refused to practise in Kochi. What should have been a domestic issue has now ended up threatening the series in India.
WICB officials and team management told Mirror that the dispute is over payments to the players. A senior West Indian player said the board has cut each player's fee by over 75 per cent and in some cases by even 1,000 per cent, though we do not know how that is possible.
The decision was apparently conveyed to the players after they reached India. Predictably, the players are up in arms against the board and have threatened to boycott the series. What has made things worse is the tacit support of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), led by former international Wavell Hinds, to the board's decision. The players, disowned by their own union, have decided to strike back on the eve of an important series.
"The problem is that the union is not backing the players. We hope they sort out the mess and start playing," a former West Indian international, conversant with the developments, told this paper from Barbados. Clive Lloyd, a respected figure domestically as well as internationally, is learnt to be sympathetic to the players' cause. Being the chairman of the selection panel, Lloyd is currently in India and is believed to be involved in negotiations between the warring parties.
Meanwhile in Kochi, the team stayed indoors at a five-star facility and captain Dwayne Bravo did not even come out for the formal unveiling of the ODI trophy. Only the Indian side had a practice session. While there was no immediate confirmation if the visitors will boycott the first ODI at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, there is no assertion from the team management either that Bravo & Co will take the field.
"There is a match tomorrow," was all a spokesman for the team told Mirror from Kochi without clearly indicating whether the team will play the game. When asked if the team was boycotting the series because of payment issues, the spokesman refused to comment. "I'm not at a liberty to discuss that matter," was his curt reply.
The Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) is in a fix over its next move and is not sure how to handle the internal matters of another board. "We've nothing to do with their problems but we have not been assured by the visiting team management that they will play tomorrow," a top BCCI official said. "Hope good sense prevails over the striking players."

I knew Wavel Hinds would turn out out be a traitor. why am I so underwhelmed by the revelation that WIPA wont support the players.
and that's why the board has challenged the players in this way, at this time. they know they have subverted the union so they move against the players. I am sure much more has been set up in the meantime to corral the players but will find out as we go.
the most striking factor about the behavior of black people in the world is heir seeming total identification with the forces against them. every where, in all black institutions, governments, communities, police forces etc., from the smallest to the largest institutions, their leaders have turned completely against black people.
and on the ground black people have turned against themselves... intellectually, ideologically, we are now in full in concert with our enemies, and totally contemptuous of black progressive people
it is the most incredible observation of life I have ever made. black people everywhere facilitating their own demise. the only contrary behavior I have observed recently is the explosion of the people of the town of Ferguson, USA. they have been fighting back. but no others are.
once I saw Wavell Hinds taking over WIPA I knew tears lay up the road for the players. Wavel Hinds was absolutely the worst leadership choice WIPA could have made

this development has the legs to challenge the existence of west indies cricket to its core.
if the players stand up that's it. Skameron and the cake bake piebus no doubt have been preparing for this. such preparation meant subverting the players union as well as gathering up all the legalities they could muster to surround the players
all alternative avenues for the players to earn a living are prolly cut off already...or they have gathered the means to cut them off. the players will likely have nowhere to turn but to accept the wicb offer. it would make no sense for the wicb to attack the players otherwise. this looks like plan long in the making.
they also in all likelihood have prepared on paper an alternative side to replace the senior players with. if the players stand firm they will likely be out and another side put in place..prolly the A side now on tour nearby. and without a doubt the BCCI is in on this. no wonder things have been going as they are...particularly the attack on Narine severely weakening the bowling. even going back to last year in Indian and the attack on Shillingford..all part of the process
they have been progressively weakening west indies. they are not building up west indies cricket but destroying it. Gibson/Butts were also part of it with their ridiculous selections..Tino Best as spearhead of the pace attack and so on. could there have been anything more ridiculous and pointless as Tino Best bowling for the west indies anywhere and at any level of the game at all ::confused:: ::confused::
