First Vice-President of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Anil Beharry is calling for three-day cricket to be re-introduced into the itinerary of Berbice cricket. His call came as he addressed government officials, including President Donald Ramotar, cricketers, sponsors and cricket administrators at the BCB Diamond Jubilee celebrations Sunday.
While noting that government has been making significant input into cricket, the administrator/player feels that enough is not being done to sustain the longer version of the game.
He noted that government has been upgrading grounds around the county which will go a far way in returning the game to its former glory.
“We notice that many Berbice cricketers are making the West Indies team, but they are not staying there. I hope that with the development of these grounds we will have more cricketers coming up and sustaining their positions in the Berbice, Guyana and West Indies teams,†Beharry commented.
He added, “We need more three-day-day cricket, but it is not marketable; it is expensive and for some reason sponsors don’t want to put their money into it because it is not as exciting as the other forms of cricket, particularly with the advent of 20/20.â€
Beharry opined that a good cricket lover is one who loves Test cricket.
“20/20 and 50-over is by the wayside compared to Test cricket so we are appealing to sponsors and if possible to the government to assist us to run off a three-day competition in the county of Berbice come 2015,†he urged stakeholders.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
