Government to finance portrait of Rohan Kanhai

A huge portrait of Rohan Kanhai, venerated cricket legend of Berbice, Guyana and the entire Caribbean, will be unveiled on September 11 as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB).
The Guyana Government will finance the cost of the portrait in recognition of the sterling contribution made to cricket by the former West Indies captain.
Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Joe Solomon, Roy Fredericks, Alvin Kalicharran, and John Trim were inducted into the Berbice Hall of Fame in 2008, and in 2012, five more Berbice stars were inducted.
They are Leslie Amsterdam, Leonard Baichan, Romain Etwaroo, Sew Shivnarine, and Milton Pydana. Lloyd  Andrews will be added next month when the BCB renames its office the Leslie Amsterdam BCB Office.
Celebrations for the BCB’s 75th anniversary will get under way on Sunday evening at Port Mourant when several cricketers and administrators will be honoured.
President Donald Ramotar will be the guest speaker at the function.
The month-long programme includes distribution of 75 hampers to the less fortunate; an essay competition; feeding of orphans and donations to the Canaan Children’s Home; renaming of pavilions at Skeldon, Port Mourant and Rose Hall after famous Test cricketers; a public exhibition; and a quiz competition.
The Government of Guyana, through the Ministries of Sports and Public Service, and the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) are playing an important role in financing the celebrations.
The main organisers are BCB President Hilbert Foster, Vice President Anil Beharry, Public Relations Officer Keith Foster, and Secretary Rosaline Haniff. Regional Chairman for Region Six, David Armgogan is also lending critical support.
