New Zealand is to slap a seven-year jail term on anyone caught match-fixing under a new law due to take effect before it hosts the Cricket World Cup and Under-20 FIFA World Cup next year.
The Match-Fixing Bill, introduced to parliament Thursday with unanimous political support, would apply the lengthy sentences to anyone caught trying to influence or benefit from the outcome of a match or race.
"Match-fixing is a growing problem internationally and has been described as the number one threat to the integrity, value and growth of sport," Sports Minister Murray McCully said.
"As we have seen from recent events, New Zealand is not immune to this threat."
Former New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent was recently banned for life from the sport after admitting to fixing, while Chris Cairns, who has denied match-fixing, remains under investigation.
Opposition sports spokesman Trevor Mallard said the bill made an important change to existing laws to make it "very clear that match-fixing is a crime. This puts it beyond any doubt whatsoever".
An International Centre for Sport Security report released earlier this year estimated that more than US$140 billion is laundered annually through sport betting "and 80 percent of global sport betting is illegal."

Match fixing has become a real problem in sports and cricket is suffering for it. This move is a good one and the seven year sentence s a good start. I would have gone for more jail time but that s just me. Hopefully when it comes into effect it will discourage match fixing.

The issue here is the acceptance of gambling and I see Gavin Hastings, Graeme Swann and Henry Blofeld advertising gambling institutions.
That opens the floodgates to all sorts.
We make errors but we should learn from them and at no time was I aware whether Samuels, Cronje, Aamir etc were utilised by the ICC to promote a 'fair play' agenda.
The attraction is normally money for those who do not earn a reasonable salary or are just down right greedy.
I believe there are far worse crimes not attracting a 7 year sentence and I think this sentence is harsh and will achieve little. All match fixers should be placed in a programme that will lead them to further educate players from the grass roots upwards.

At 21 I met my future wife. Our first date was to the movies and most of the rest of our dating was at the racetrack. We had a joint checking account saving for our wedding. She would put money in and I wouldn't. I needed to use my money for gambling. I was still looking for another big win. I thought the perfect place for our honeymoon would be Las Vegas or Puerto Rico since I knew both places had casinos. My wife to be didn't think that was a good idea. I guess she understood enough about my gambling already. At 23 we got married and I wanted to stop gambling at that point. I thought that I could. Within a short time I was already back to gambling. Even though I wanted to stop, I realize today that I couldn't. I needed to gamble like any drug addict needed to stick that needle in their arm, or any alcoholic needed to have that drink.

A step in the right direction by the New Zealand sports authorities. Guess it must have been precipitated by the furore from Vincents confession. This means bad news for Chris Cairns though. He will be in some real trouble now if the charges against him are conclusively proven.
