When I played cricket, the only thing that worked to help my batting was the mantra “watch the ballâ€.
When I really watched closely, my hands and feet more often moved when they were supposed to, and my demise was thwarted longer. Many times, I uttered the words to myself as the bowler approached, but later – when walking back to the pavilion having been dismissed – I realised that I had lost focus at the crucial moment. I hadn’t really been watching the ball as closely, when it mattered, as I could have.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul watches the ball as closely as any man who has played cricket. And his long, consistent, ever-improving career is an inspiration.
