I have to admit I have been calling for Ramdin being captain for a long time.

Ramdin has been ver encouraging and I like him saying to his bowlers "I like the effort". He incessantly encourages And an empty stadium allows you to hear this.

Having seen Ramdin skipper for a long time I expected his test transition to be seamless.

Whilst I congratulate him and his team in a Magnificat win as this kiwi exam is strong, I feel he has made basic captaincy fyaux pas I would not expect.

He has manipulated his bowlers well but his field placings has been poor to the fast bowlers and he has not been as attacking this morning as he should have been.

The fact he has won the test is irrelevant as he needs to be more proactive as hoe has been at other levels.

Thoughts?

However I do acknowledge it is his second test in charge and he has won.

He will get better but to share a strategy with the ignoramus a strategically vacant and prat Gibson is a disaster.

Ramdin you should be doing better, come on.

* Richie Benaud once remarked, "Captaincy is 90% luck and 10% skill. But don't try it without that 10%." ;D

* No question Ramdin possesses the skill.  He has had success at all levels as captain----under 15, under 19, Trinidad captain, and now as WI captain he has gotten his first test win.

* In his post match interview Ramdin admitted that he would have done some things differently.

* We all learn from our mistakes, and surely Ramdin will learn from his.

* It was a hard fought  win by Skipper Ramdin and his boys.

* With some luck, Ramdin may very well win his first test series against the higher ranked NZ team.

I did not see the post match interview but that is a good sign that he immediately acknowledge he should have done some things differently.

That said I was shocked, school boy error, not to attack and have a short leg in.

His personal keeping has suffered.

Well done Ramo but sort it out.

After all you are not a spring chicken and you have waited a long time for this.

You do not have the luxury of a Sammy.

* Ramdin was a tad scrappy behind the wicket----he conceded 13 byes in Trinidad and 19 in Jamaica, but in the 2 tests thus far he has taken 9 catches----including 5 in the NZ 2nd innings in Trinidad.

* His batting has been solid----39, 34, 32 in the current series----he said he needs to carry on.

Saying it's 90% luck is underselling it a bit, IMO. But I agree with the sentiment. And yeah, we could do all sort of analyses about tactics one way or the other, there's no pleasing everyone. I think he did fine, even in the lost match as a captain.

RAMDIN CRITICAL OF RAMDIN'S CAPTAINCY

Ramdin was also critical of his own captaincy, pointing out that his field placement also needed improvement.

He was guilty of negative tactics, setting defensive fields from as early as the first over on the final day, allowing both Watling and Craig to pick off singles and ease any pressure.

“It (captaincy) is challenging I would say, it is not something I am accustomed to in terms of West Indies level but hopefully with more games to come, I will go from strength to strength,” the wicketkeeper/batsman noted.

“There is a lot of improvement . In terms of field placing, looking back at the game in hindsight, there are things we could have done better but hopefully come Barbados, we can get those things right.

That is a man facing up to the reality which is good.

However, Ramdin, having Captained successfully for some time now missed out on a few basics but he lead his team to victory so there is hope of him learning quickly like Strauss.

What I have been impressed with is his resolve in batting.

He will get better.

I do not believe 90% is luck although there is an element of luck. Sussing the batsmen's weaknesses, knowing about bowler rotation, field placing are not necessarily luck and it is a major % of what happens on the field.

That said that is another debate and wish Ramdin well.

Noticed he was selected Captain for just this series compared to the for life agreement Sammy had.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I do recall as  a matter of established practice/ protocols, Captains used to be selected for one or maybe two series.

* The WICB usually selects their captain on a series to series basis.

* Hopefully Ramdin can win the NZ series and the next one against Bang.

* After Bang---the next 2 series will be against SA and ENG.

He has given his service as an honest and wholehearted performer and would leave with my heartfelt thanks for his contribution.
