West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin hinted that there may be changes to his team for the Second Test against New Zealand, starting at the Queen’s Park Oval on Monday.
Ramdin speaking to the T&T Guardian at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel yesterday said: “We are meeting this afternoon to pick the squad for the second Test in Trinidad and there may be one or two changes to the team.â€
Barbadian opener Kraigg Brathwaite could find himself slotting into the openers roles in place of Keiran Powell, while allrounder Dwayne Bravo may be back to replace Kirk Edwards, which gives the team that extra bowling option.
Jamaican Marlon Samuels who got a ‘pair’ in the first Test is likely to be given another chance to atone for his failure because leading into the series he got a century in a practice match.
The West Indies went under to New Zealand by 186 runs in the opening Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Wednesday and Ramdin thinks that his batsmen for far too long have been failing.
“Over the past few series this has been happening with both the senior and young batsmen not coming up with runs. When you are chasing 500 runs plus and you get bowled out for 262 in your first innings it is always going to be difficult coming back from that. The toss at Sabina was crucial, they had really great conditions to bat in and we were hoping to have first strike, so that our spinners could have prospered later in the match.â€

In the short few days between the first and second Test the West Indies will have to make a huge turn around if they are to stay relevant in this series.

Ramdin said: “The batsmen just have to remain confident. Shivnarine Chanderpaul is making runs, Gayle got a start here and I myself got a start in the first innings and looked good in the second innings but did not carry on. The young batsmen just have to keep positive, Marlon got a century in the warm-up matches, so did Darren Bravo and we are hoping that these guys stay confident and go out there and get the runs.â€

Ramdin was full of praise for his bowlers saying: “I must say our bowlers did very well and we as batsmen need to give them runs to work with and also give them time to recuperate. It is not nice having to field for 140 overs and then they are out there quickly fighting with the bat.â€

On the point of Ramdin coming back into the fold for the third Test, Ramdin said: “Well I would have liked to have him play in the first Test but the West Indies have their policy and we have to abide by that. If he gets a chance to come back for the third that will be great, if not we just have to work with the resources we have and look to still take this series.â€

The West Indies boys did not train yesterday as they used to day to freshen up ahead of what will be a must win match in Trinidad if they are to go on and win this series.

Braithwaite inclusion will be a welcome move instead of powell at the top and Dwayne Bravo...Welcome back...I am sure the team will need you at this critical juncture.he can make a difference.
@Samuels : Dude...What about Rohit sharma in India..He was a failure but still was persisted with and now,he has realized his role and has started performing..Sometimes longer the rope, better the chance.
