DAVID Allen was one of the finest cricketers in Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s history. The off-spinner played 39 Test Matches for England in the 1960s and claimed more than 1,000 wickets in his long first-class career.
He maintained an avid interest in cricket until the end – being president of Thornbury Cricket Club in South Gloucestershire, where he an active and well-loved presence.
His death, on Saturday, at the age of 78, comes only three months after John Mortimore, that other great Gloucestershire off-spinner of the 1950s and 1960s went to the great pavilion in the sky.
Gloucestershire announced his death today. In a statement, the county said: “Our sincere sympathy goes out to his family and friends.†Allen was born in the Horfield area of Bristol in 1935 – little more than a well-thrown cricket ball away from the Gloucestershire ground at Nevil Road.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
