It wasn't only the prospective exposure and windfall that comes with hosting a one-day international against Australia that elicited a grin from Cricket Ireland's chief executive Warren Deutrom when the 2015 Ashes schedule was announced this week.
In addition to providing a chance to acknowledge the support that Australia has shown for Ireland's continuing push for full Test status, it enables the up-and-comers to once again showcase their big-game credentials against the world's top-ranked ODI outfit.
Ireland will host Australia at a venue to be decided on August 27 next year, in a 50-over match that precedes the ODI portion of Australia's much-awaited Ashes tour of the UK.
Having qualified for next year's ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and as they've shown in previous international tournaments they are capable of mixing it with the best on the global stage and, as a result, Ireland is eyeing an elevation to Test ranks in the near future.
Deutrom told cricket.com.au that the scheduling of a home one-day international against Australia is a vital step in that progression, and adds a further chapter to the long and strong association between administrative cricket bodies in the two nations.
"Cricket Australia has been a terrific supporter (and) I think with all the Australians I've ever met it's always been about meritocracy," Deutrom said.
"It doesn't matter your age, your background or whether you're a full member or an associate (International Cricket Council member), if you are good enough you deserve a go.
