Many of last year’s national Under-17 cricketers will aim to impress the selectors today and tomorrow in the first national U-19 trial match at Gilbert Park, California in preparation for the West Indies Cricket Board Regional U-19 tournament in August.
At the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Tobago House of Assembly Regional U-17 50-over tournament in Tobago last year, the national team won the title, led by left-handed wicket-keeper batsman Amir Jangoo. Jangoo, who will feature in the trial match, scored 259 runs in the U-17 tournament last year, at an average of 51.8 runs. Jangoo, who plays in the national league for Merry Boys, won the Most Valuable Player award. Many of Jangoo’s former U-17 teammates will also aim to make the step up to the U-19 team, including Jyd Goolie, Anderson Phillip, Brandon Jaggernauth, Jeron Maniram, Shane Smith, Afdal Khan and Clevon Kalawan. Kalawan was part of the U-17 and U-19 national teams last year.
Also receiving a call up were numerous players from last year’s U-19 team, including Brian Christmas, Kalawan, Jesse Bootan, Camillo Carimbocas, Justin Joseph and Jeremy Solozano. Left-handed Solozano was the national U-19 team’s top scorer in last year’s WICB U-19 tournament. The WICB U-19 tournament last year was played in two segments, with T&T finishing second in the three-day competition and third in the 50-over leg.
