THE West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) plans to professionalise cricket regionally, according to its president Whycliffe “Dave†Cameron.
The WICB staged a media conference yesterday at the Jade Room, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port-of-Spain. Cameron, asked about the surpluses the WICB can get in the next eight years, as part of the new International Cricket Council (ICC) approved changes to its governance, financing and structure of international cricket, replied, “I’m not looking at the surpluses.
“Where we’re at is, with the improved structure, we’d be able to play more cricket,†said the Jamaican. “The volume of cricket in the region has been low and we believe those are the things that we need to fund. We need to look at the territorial boards’ system, we need to make that a professional system, and that is where we’re looking at. We’re not looking at surpluses but it’s how we get West Indies cricket to be better.†The WICB recently staged the NAGICO-sponsored Super50 Tournament in the twin-island republic and Cameron said, “I’d like to thank the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and, in particular, Minister Vasant Bharath and the Ministry of Trade for their support in this tournament, through their brand Invest TT. I’d also like to thank the TTCB (Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board) for their hard work.
