We didn't show any resolve - Bernard Jr

National senior men's cricket team captain, David Bernard Jr, said the team did not produce its usual battling qualities during the seven-wicket defeat against Trinidad and Tobago in the semi-finals of the just-concluded WICB Nagico Insurance Super-50 tournament.

Speaking on the team's return to the country yesterday, Bernard Jr outlined that unlike earlier matches when the team recovered from precarious positions, such an occurrence did not repeat itself and they were dismissed for a paltry 49 off 24.2 overs.

Trinidad and Tobago, in their reply, achieved their target at 51 for three off 13.1 overs.

"In other games of the competition we were able to recover from seemingly difficult positions, but in the semi-finals we did not show any resolve," said Bernard Jr.

"We were a bit unfortunate with a few controversial decisions from the start and that basically set the tone for the innings.

"We also did not recover from the pressure that was applied by the Trinidad bowling attack and as a result we made a dismal total."

Jamaica without ace batsmen Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels - due to injuries - were 32 for three inside 10 overs against Windward Islands in their first game, before going on to score 282 for five off 50 overs and win by 14 runs.

RECOVERY

They were also 62 for two inside 10 overs against Ireland in their second fixture, which they went on to win by six wickets while rattling up 166 for four; and 45 for three in the 15th over against Guyana, before recovering to score 243 for seven and win by 10 runs.

Bernard Jr, who outlined that the Jamaica team was disappointed with the result, said they will be seeking to make amends in the upcoming regional four-day tournament.

"Obviously, we are a bit disappointed but that is the past and that is the game of cricket, sometimes things do happen," he said.

"We have the four-day competition coming up and the players are eager and ready to go out there and reclaim the title."
