Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians to go for broke

NEW DELHI:
With the deadline for the player retention lists coming up at 5pm on Friday, all Indian Premier League (IPL) teams are eagerly waiting for the names which the franchises will submit.

The lists will give a clear picture about the players who are not being retained and will thus be in the auction pool for the upcoming season.

Top teams like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have indicated that they are likely to retain five stars, the maximum allowed. Rajasthan Royals too are looking to retain five, including Shane Watson and the find of last season: Sanju Samson.

Royals Challengers Bangalore have already announced that they were retaining three players - Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers.

As reported by TOI earlier, the franchise has also appointed Daniel Vettori as the new coach and Allan Donald as the bowling coach.

With Kolkata Knight Riders and Hyderabad Sunrisers looking to retain only two cricketers, they also have an option of buying out two cricketers in the February auction.

With Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Dardevils not revealing much about their team strategies, it can be assumed that they will keep their options open at the auction.

TOI has learnt that barring MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings), Virat Kohli ( Royal Challengers Bangalore), Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) and Chris Gayle (RCB), none of the other retained players will draw the maximum salary on offer, as per the guidelines issued by IPL's governing council (GC).

"The rule states that the first capped player is supposed to get a certain amount. If the team wants to retain him for a lesser amount and he is not willing to play for that amount, he could be brought back in the auction. What is mentioned in the salary bracket is the amount of money which will be deducted from the actual purse," a team official explained.

Teams also said that most of the retained players were under the impression that whatever salary is given in the IPL rule regulation is what the players are supposed to get.

As per the IPL rule book, the first retention is worth Rs 12.5 crore, the second player will get Rs 9.5, the third cricketer is supposed to make Rs 7.5 while the fourth and fifth retained player would get a salary of Rs 5.5 and Rs 4 crore respectively per annum.

RETENTION PLAN

Mumbai: Rohit Sharma, Pollard, Malinga/ Johnson, Harbhajan Singh/ Pragyan Ojha, Ambati Rayudu/Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Smith

Chennai: MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Suresh Raina, R Ashwin. Dwayne Bravo, Faf du'Plesis and Murali Vijay.

Bangalore: Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de'Villiers (Retained).

Kolkata: Gautam Gambhir and Sunil Narine.

Hyderabad: Shikhar Dhawan, Dale Steyn.

Punjab: David Miller.

Rajasthan: Shane Watson, Ajinkya Rahane, Stuart Binny, Sanju Samson and James Faulker.

Delhi: David Warner

Rules for retention

1) Maximum number of players a team can retain: 5 (capped or uncapped, no more than four of whom can be capped Indians)

2) The player contract for the retained player (in standard form and signed by both the player and the franchise) must be lodged with the BCCI on or before January 10, 2014

3) Embargo on franchises approaching players who were in another team's 2013 squad until January 11.

4) Irrespective of the IPL league fee that is agreed between the two parties and which is set out in the player contract, the 2014 salary cap for the franchises will be charged as follows:

For Capped Players

Rs 12.5 Cr for the first capped player retained
Rs 9.5 Cr for the second capped player
Rs 7.5 Cr for the third capped player
Rs 5.5 Cr for the fourth capped player
Rs 4 Cr for the fifth capped player

For Uncapped Players

There's only a handful of reasons to watch IPL:

DALE STEYN
SUNIL NARINE
and
RCB - Gayle, Kohli and De Villiers are a joy to watch. In fact, Kohli is absorbing and learning from Gayle and De Villiers in such a way that he is likely to become a new breed of mutant, super cricketer, the likes of which we not quite seen before. Also, Kohli has bushy caterpillar eyebrows.

IPL also seems to have helped out Dwayne Smith, which is good.

Oh, and the atmosphere is great. You dont see those crowds anywhere else.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Rajasthan is crazy. Why are they retaining Stuart Binny? I know he's done well for them, but retaining him, really? I would have thought they'd have let him out and maybe get him back.
And there is no need to retain Faf either. He's done a damn fine job for them, but retention worthy? I don't think so.
And I rate Faf very highly - especially on Test level.

Everything negative people say about IPL is true (bad bowling, bad pitches etc), but it's also responsible for training a lot of our players. Our players have more shots now because of IPL, more muscle, better fielding and more confidence, though probably worse patience and worse shot selection.
