Broad struck by a "sandshoe crusher"

Broad, England’s leading wicket-taker for the series, was struck flush in the foot by a sandshoe crusher from Australian speedster Mitchell Johnson when batting earlier today.

While the blow cost Broad his wicket, adjudged unequivocally lbw, it may have delivered an even greater return for the Australians with Broad’s future in the series now in doubt.

He says he will try to bat in this match, but that seems unlikely given he attended the post-match press conference on crutches.

He was unable to take the field when England began bowling in Australia’s second innings, having gifted Australia a first innings lead of 134.

Tim Bresnan was given the new ball with James Anderson in Broad’s absence.

Broad limped to the WACA practice nets in an attempt to gauge whether he would be able to return to the field, but after several half-pace deliveries it was deemed too much of a risk for him to continue bowling without a full diagnosis of his injury.

He was then taken to hospital for x-rays ion the damaged foot and further reports on his condition are expected throughout the next day.

Also late in England’s innings, spinner Graeme Swan was struck on the index finger of his bowling hand by Peter Siddle.

Swann received treatment for the blow amid fears it may restrict his capacity to bowl in Australia’s innings.

However, he took the field at the start of England’s bowling stint and was called into the attack in the ninth over as England struggled to stay in the match.

I saw the Broad out and we would call it Toe crusher OR " pound foot " ( pung foot )
