Tendulkar farewell: iffy LBW spells strife for English umpire

THE first instalment of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's farewell tour fell flat last night when he made only ten runs against the West Indies in the first innings of his penultimate Test.

The 'Little Master', who retires from the sport later this month, appeared in good nick as he settled in at the crease, but after two crisp boundaries helped him to double figures he misjudged a ball from spinner Shane Shillingford and was given out LBW.

TV replays suggested that the ball was going over the stumps and the decision from English umpire Nigel Llong did not go down well among Indian fans, who were hoping to see their hero Tendulkar pile on the runs in his 199th Test appearance

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Poor chap. Wrong time and wrong person to get a wrong decision against.
Mistakes happen, people should just stop hounding the umpire.

KOLKATA: If  Twitterati is to be believed, it will be a long shot for umpire  Nigel Llong to get out of the country without facing irate fans of master blaster  Sachin Tendulkar who was given out in a contentious decision on Thursday.

A pindrop silence descended on the Eden as Llong raised his finger while the Windies players jumped in joy on the second day of the first cricket Test between India and the West Indies here.

The crowd was cheering every move of the cricketing genius since he came out to bat. The entire stadium rose as Tendulkar made the long walk back to the pavilion, but the ovation was tinged with sadness.

Facing offie  Shane Shillingford , Tendulkar tried to defend from his crease and the ball straightened past the outside edge and hit the back leg quite high. Tendulkar, who has been the victim of dubious decisions on a number of occasions earlier, went out silently but anguish and pain were writ large on his face.

Even English cricketer Michael Vaughn hinted at the anger of Kolkata fans well-known for considering cricket as a religion.

"Nigel Llong might need little help getting out of India @Queen_UK #INDvsWI," tweeted Vaughn.

Echoing Vaughn, Tendulkar's admirers also chirped away warnings: "Now Nigle Llong need Z+ security for leaving Kolkata."

Another said, "Dear (Umpire) Nigel Llong ! U ll suffer for ur wrong judgement."

While Llong's decision was adjudged "wrong umpiring" by most, some also went to the extent of accusing him of prejudice.

"One does not simply get Sachin Tendulkar OUT. You need a wrong umpiring to send him off."

"Umpires must be wise over Sachin Tendulkar...... Decisions should not be prejudised with personal opinions...Shame on Decision.."

Kindly reconsider your statement and try to be objective please.
In real time I thought he was out. The side caption subsequently showed it to be possibly going over.
India, in their wisdom, have chosen to be the only test nation to not support the DRS with Tendulkar being its biggest campaigner citing they do not wish to undermine the Umpire's authority. Stick to that principle.
The DRS aims to eliminate a howler and Llong's decision was not a howler to the naked eyes in real time.
So India and Sachin should support their principle of not undermining the umpire and accept the decision.
India simply cannot have everything their own way as their abuse of their new influence in Cricket is becoming overbearing.
Be careful what you wish for others Rani.

Tendy should have done what the Good Doctor did in the 19th century when given
out in an important match.  He just stayed at the crease and told the ump: "The people are here to see me bat not
you umpire."
