Truth is if you never lived in Britain you would not know him.
But he is about as famous as anyone can get in Great Britain. Back in the day he was an extremely popular disc jockey on the BBC and trust me all those BBC dee jays were famous. Jimmy Savile was probably the most famous.
Then he hosted the extremely popular "Top of the Pops" on BBC 1 which was a must see half hour TV show. Of course this was in the days before cable when there were only 3 channels - BBC 1, BBC2, and ITV.
As he got older he moved on to advertising. When the push was on to use seat belts he became the face of the push with the slogan - "Clunk, click, every trip". He also did a huge amount of charitable work.
he was eventually knighted by her majesty.
As you can imagine these revelations are shocking and the push is now on for the truth and who knew what and when.

A young woman makes allegations against a famous person like Saville and she gets ridiculed. I could well imagine the nastiness of the British tabloids as they tear into the private life of someone. Plus the British police do not exactly have a good reputation - the Stephen Lawrence affair and the massive cover up about Hillsborough are but two examples.
Also look how long it took for the accusations to surface re Catholic priests and in the Sandusky scandal.
I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for a young teenage girl to come forward with accusations when Saville was at the height of his fame.
I am waiting to see what the various inquiries uncover.

One of Savile's former bosses at BBC Radio 1 has said that he questioned the DJ about rumours over his private life more than 20 years ago.
He asked the entertainer about "these rumours we hear".
"And he said that's all nonsense".
UNBELIEVABLE - you ask a suspected predator if what he is doing is true.
