I was not sure how to begin with this story, for after having conducted the interview, I found myself thinking, "where is the story here, what is there to tell?" But perhaps I was looking in the wrong direction, for the more I think on Renei Paul's story, the more I see the value in highlighting her story; for it is one of resilience. At the age of 23, Paul is the youngest counsellor at this country's only government-run therapeutic community centre, the Piparo Empowerment Centre. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Sciences, with concentrations in psychology and sociology, from the University of the Southern Caribbean and is currently enrolled there pursuing her Master of Science in counselling psychology with a concentration in marriage and family counselling — a reality that almost was not.
