OTTAWA -- Perhaps Canadians are taking Jack Layton's dying wish to heart.
From his death bed last summer, the late NDP leader exhorted people to be more loving, hopeful and optimistic. If the unprecedented outpouring of grief that ensued -- and the fond memories Canadians continue to cherish a year later -- are any indication, it could be they're doing just that.
At the very least, they've banished the cynicism normally reserved for politicians.
In the days that followed Layton's death last Aug. 22, the odd critic could be heard muttering about a maudlin spectacle of group mourning -- thousands scribbling emotional chalk messages and leaving flowers, stuffed toys, cans of Orange Crush and other mementoes at impromptu memorials.
"Teddy-bear grief," some sniffed. A mawkish over-reaction, they said, to the death of someone most Canadians had never met and who had never risen higher than leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition -- a position he held for only for a few short months before succumbing to cancer.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

canada caught a bad break there.
in the current social state Layton was the best we could do in terms of the quality of politicians available. that profession is now almost 100% human dregs globally..all of them..capable of selling their mothers for what they want.
that is how money came to buy out that profession..by controlling access due to monopoly of money a politician must have money to pay for the means to reach the electorate..and if he is not prepared to sell his soul he has no chance.
only the worse kinds of people sell their souls. and those are our politicians. every last one of them.
just take a look at that fella who deh repalce Layton with. wats his name...Thomas Mulcahy or something.
few appear are as bad as dat thing...fella I meant. he is one of the worst sorts of a bad lot.... politicans. he was in every party and got kicked out of at least one. he ended up in the NDP and now is its leader
who got him in as NDP leader.... riiight! dats how came they own every political party
