Controversy is brewing in Montserrat after Premier Reuben Meade told a United Nations special group that it does not want independence from Britain and would willingly remain a colony..
Montserrat has a population of roughly 4,500 people.
The island was devastated by a volcano that killed about 30 people in 1995.
Premier Meade reportedly said the island wants to remain “a part of the U.K. family and asked the U.N. Special Committee on Decolonization to strike it off the list of countries that the world body is helping to become independent from colonizing nations.
The island’s opposition leader, Romeo Donaldson is upset .
He claims that no one in Parliament had been consulted or forewarned about the decision.
He also cited other instances where he alleged the premier had acted unilaterally.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

what donaldson makign noise about! there is nutten to discuss. an independent nation of 4500 people is nonsense in the face of a dependent status that is no so bad.
the alternative would be independent as part of Caricom. what kind of choice is that

a situation on its merits man.
consider montserrat on its own in caricom. montserrat has nutten at all save peace an quiet greenery on a small space.
4500 people. thats west main street in hamilton ontario canada. the neighborhood I live..part of it..about a fifth.
independence to do what?
england sent a boat for all of them to move to england in the eruption. they got compensation, resettlement benefits, english passports. they can get an education, go to university etc. become profesional and live, work out all the problems of blackness, master/slave etc.
they would be capable with the education
Caricom wont care. university would not be an option unless they can pay. to get into uwi is tears...
man let them pack up and go to england. its bad there but at least there would be a chance depeding on their determination to succeed. there would be none as independent in caricom.
the older folk can stay and live out their lives in the warmth and peace of montserrat on british pensions..as long as the volcano doh blow. the younger people must leave and go build themselves in england.
this is one small instance when to my mind independence is not even a question to discuss
