I loved Napster. Used to download tons and tons of music. Then there was Limewire....ahhhh, the good ol' days.

what's different? now there are a bunch of unlimited online music companies (including napster) that you can sync with your devices just paying like $15/month. good thing is that you sync from one place across devices. the 'personal cloud'.
and for the rebels there still are lots of p2p downloads (frostwire, etc.)

check out frostwire...its also free. a lot of people use torrents these days. there are so many ways to do it, just have to know where to look.
if you have a good antivirus and you know what you're looking at/downloading you won't have to worry about it. i've had one virus in the last 6 years and i do my fair share of downloading...just saying.
said virus was also because of someone else -_-.
