Something is changing in Honduras. It could be that the brutal killing of a journalist was the final straw for President Porfirio Lobo - but then there have been 23 such killings since February 2010. It could be that Lobo was moved by a critical human rights report released by the US State Department - but then that is nothing new either. Alternatively, it could be that Lobo was swayed by a botched counter-narcotics operation conducted by the Honduran police with US support, or even by pressure from a multinational special advisory commission on police reform set up in January. Whatever it was, Lobo has finally taken the plunge. He has taken the decision to push for a wholesale cleansing of the corrupt and discredited national police force (PNC) – and this time his actions suggest he means business.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
