Bandits cart off half million dollars in Berbice
Bandits on the Corentyne have escaped with almost half a million dollars worth of jewellery after terrorizing and robbing a Corentyne businessman and his family.
Reports are that around 19 hours 30 on Tuesday Shivlall Sherkissoon of number 19 village Corentyne was attacked by five men, one of whom was armed with a shot gun.
Investigations revealed that Sherkissoon was in his grocery shop talking to his Uncle Sooklall, when they were confronted by the men.
The armed man stood guard at the gate while the others demanded cash and jewellery from Shivlall and Sooklall.
The perpetrators then proceeded into the house where they held up Shivlall’s niece Keisha Mohabir and took away a quantity of gold jewellery valued at four hundred thousand dollars.
While escaping, the men discharged several rounds injuring a neighbour who was on her verandah.
Bibi Hassan was struck to her left shoulder while Mahendra Dharma, a relative of the Sherkissoons was shot in both legs.
They have been admitted patients at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
