Indra Gangabissoon was married for 59 years. She gave birth to six daughters, and lived and raised her family at their home in Calcutta, Freeport.

She held her family close to her. It was the only way she knew. It was a way of life until a merciless act of violence on Thursday cut her life short.

Gangabissoon was savagely beaten and bludgeoned at her home after she and her husband, Sugrim, returned home after cashing their pension cheques, and Sugrim had kept an eye appointment.

Indra succumbed to her injuries yesterday at about 8.30 am at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

Gangabissoon celebrated her 76th birthday on March 25. She and her husband were supposed to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary on that ill-fated day when they were attacked.

Sugrim, 93, a former employee of the Board of Inland Revenue, sustained injuries to his head and chest, and still has problems recalling what exactly transpired during the incident.

But his wife did not give up her life without a fight, not without struggling for what she knew was her and her life.

Even while suffering from the grief of losing his lifelong partner yesterday, Sugrim spoke briefly with Sunday Newsday at his home.

“I do not know what was in her mind when she struggled for her life, but she gave the best she could, trying to do her part, lovingly and honestly, and it’s the same thing we want to do.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

when I was growing updeh tell me the westindies was a fun loivingplace, trinidadians in particular a playful, fete loving gentle people.

I cud never see dat!  I was the last in my family so my brothers big and gorne were never to protec me from cutarse.  the teaches in school were Brutal especially a big blac buldyke, Miss C,... who used to use my back as a sounding board for her leather belt.

I was the brightest student in her class, but she picked on me. I will have that Mf woman till the day I die.

and so it went thought family life and the life around me...all terrible.  I hated Trinidad  he people so it was beyond words to describe.  all I saw around me was violence, hate, exploitation and little care among the people.

then I came to understand more and more and ultimately saw the why of it all and the lie by which we lived..the central lie that spawed all the subsidiary ones.  and tha hypocrissy has continued into independence and has magnified now out of all proportions.  westindians now are totally swallowed up in its lie so much so there is little hope anytme soon they will understand what has heepend to us, what keeps happening and how to stop and clean ourselves up.

the westindies has its trauma, ever present in our life and like all traumas it is unrecognisable and obsessional and ever presnt in the life, causing untold damage and will cause such damage until we hold it, makeout it s shape and cause and so defeat it and be able to develop a progressive life.

its simple..we have had slavery, colonialism and indenture and systematically they have left their marks on our psyche,  but the overall conteadciton is that of capitalist exploitation that does not allow us to address our problems frontally.  and if we do not endeavour o see who we are, to dscover and establish our tue selves and what we have been through that made us who we are..and to change that by chaing the basi way we do business..a way that keeps us ignorant of truth and prevents us from solving our problems than what is noted above and far worse will continue to go on.

as I said go down to the gul of Paria in Titty on the left side of the of the islands on the caribbean sea and part the waters and the blood of 5 hundred years of conquest can be seen in the red just below the surface.  that caribbean sea is a bloody sea boy leh mih tell you.

dont let them tell you that the westindian people are any different that what you see above.  the westindian people are just as brutal, violent, crazy, degraded, carnivorous and internecine as any people ever in the human career so far.

I knew that from a lil bwoy as victim of the barbarity.  I am only different NOW that I have seen what has happened, did my best to understand myself as to who I am and where I am from..and so changed myself to the extent I have succeeded.

but look out for a lot more of stuff like that.  it goes on all the time..even as we speak.  what yu see in the news isnt the half of it.  and all are doing crazy stuff..all afros, indos, white and mixed..maronite christians, chinese...all on one level or another.

AND NO ONE CARES man!  thast the outstanding feature of the westindies..ESPECIALLY OF TITTY AND TITTYS.  THATS THE AMBIENCE WITHIN WHICH IT ALL TAKES PLACE.  IN ADDITION TO OUR HISTORICAL DISABILITY NO ONE GIVES A EFF!

I did'nt/dont hold myself to be..jess as part of it having been born in it,  I have come to know our variant very well and have worked out what a collective solution might be.

naturally of it I am of course concerned abou it.

by placing my own experience in my reply I was trying to establish credibility in my response.
