A NEW ERA, A TURNING POINT, A NEW GENERATION OF GUYANESE VOTERS
Uncontested nomination marked a historic day in Guyanese politics as Azruddin Mohamed was sworn in as the Leader of the Opposition without a vote. A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) did not field a candidate, recognizing that the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, led by Mohamed, holds the majority of opposition seats, making his elevation inevitable.
What makes this moment historic is the speed and scale of Azruddin’s rise. In just three short months, Prior to the September 1, 2025 general election, Mohamed’s newly formed WIN party surged unexpectedly to second place with about 109,066 votes, capturing 16 seats in the 65-member National Assembly. That performance catapulted his movement into the position of main opposition, displacing long-standing main opposition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), a historical upset for Guyana’s political landscape.
Today’s swearing-in signaled a clear break from the past. The development has also ruffled the feathers of the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic, as a new and assertive opposition voice takes center stage with a strong parliamentary mandate.
Azruddin’s emergence reflects more than a leadership change, it marks the rise of a new generation of voters demanding accountability, fresh ideas, and alternatives to politics as usual. As Guyana enters this new chapter, his rapid ascent is being viewed by supporters and critics alike as a major turning point in the country’s modern political history.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
