Guyana’s ‘lawless’ giveaways force Brazil to bend over backwards to keep oil

Kaieteur News – Competition for investors in the petroleum industry has grown stiff in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the genesis of the global energy transition.
With this shift, countries have had to ensure that as they work to ensure that their regulation is strong enough to prevent being robbed by oil companies. They would also offer terms and a system that is fair and attractive. Guyana has so far avoided striking this crucial balance between being an attractive investment destination and securing value for its people.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Roberto Castello Branco, of Brazil’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, threatened Brazil late last year to set the company’s sights on Guyana, if the government took too long to issue environmental permits to drill in Brazil’s Fox do Amazonas Basin, according to S&P Global Platts.
The energy industry information provider reported Branco as saying: “This has to be resolved,” during an address at the Rio Oil & Gas 2020 digital conference. “We have big oil prospects there, and we’re prohibited while Guyana is enjoying a moment and opening up,” he reportedly added.
S&P went on to report, on December 31, 2020 that Brazil is eyeing more industry reforms to lure investors, amidst a series of moves already made. The firm said that Brazil needs to buck up to remain one of the world’s top destinations for energy investments.

Guyana can't help but be robbed by the big oils. no country can save the Chinse an Russians...and even Russian was taken over for a time. now Russia owns its own industry, controls the whole show. it is either you control of forget it.

and I imagine controlling your own oil industry is going to be hard to impossible in the west as a small country.

were I the authorities in BG I would forget about it...leave the oil in the ground, or work with the Venezuelans to get some out for profit were that possible. the Americans wont like BG working with the Venezuelans and would try to do something about it.

Guyana has only a small population and a big land. it should not be hard at all to build up a strong life for Guyanese quickly and safely that is non oil.

food seems to be the answer...good clean food in abundance...No GMO, NO pesticides and poisonous chemicals of any sort...the development of a strong academic and technological infrastructure around such agriculture that would be a source of revenue itself.

top agricultural schools right to the top levels: Tropical agriculture that is not featured at all in the world dominated by western temperate agriculture as produced by western schools

there should be endless market opportunities for provable clean food in the world...the nearby world... for Guyanese production.

and Guyana should be focused on the development of its own market...the Caribbean...English, Dutch, Spanish and French Caribbean. there are a max of about 10 to 12 million such citizens, all whom would fit into Guyana with lots of room left.

but that is not the point or goal at all. the point is for there to develop regional prosperity that would make them all profitable making a sound market amongst themselves for all that they make, all where they travel and live and work within themselves...a real Caribbean market and region that sets them all up.

Guyana could be the centre of that but the region would maintain and develop it's diversity which also in itself is a tremendous advantage indeed. if the west indies makes such a success they are going to have to beat off the citizens of their former 'mother' countries with brooms on the beaches, as they flock in, in effort to become citizens to escape the horror that is western Europe today

How? not even the developed countries get that?

and the Majors want to keep governments out of all business... not just oil. to get good revenue in the public purse you are going to have to regulate and the Majors would allow that to happen...or if it happens make it superficial, meaningless.

do not dream! this is serious business. and there are major positive alternative crying out for recognition, focus and development

Guyana can only prosper if they have the necessary skill set to manage the oil sector if they don't Guyana will become a poverty stricken country .

I trust Bharat Jagdeo's strategy on attracting oil companies and exploiting this resource expeditiously. Although the terms of the Exxon PSA are not advantageous to Guyana, future contracts can be improved to our benefit. Ignorance, incompetence and secrecy plagued the PNC/AFC handling of the renegotiated PSA in 2016.
That will not occur under Bharat Jagdeo, but he must be made to be accountable to the public.
