Yesterday, the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall M.P., met with the Berbice Bar Association at the Berbice High Court, Esplanade Road, New Amsterdam.
Accompanying the Attorney General were the Assistant Registrar of the Deeds Registry, Assistant Registrar of the Commercial Registry and an Assistant Commissioner of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
In his opening remarks, the Attorney General assured the Bar that they have a friend in Office. He pledged to work with them absolutely to deliver the best services to the people of Berbice. The Attorney General discussed many important concepts with the Berbice Bar, including, his legislative agenda and the Support for the Criminal Justice System an IDB funded project.
The Attorney General announced that every service offered by the Deeds and Commercial Registry in Georgetown would be offered by the Deeds and Commercial Registry in Berbice. For example, currently companies are not being incorporated in Berbice, patents and copyrights are also not being registered at the Berbice Registry. These services can only be accessed in Georgetown. The Attorney General announced that these services will now be provided by the Berbice Registry from next week. He pointed out that in principle there is no reason why such services should only be offered in Georgetown.
The Berbice lawyers raised many concerns, including, delays in the Deeds and Commercial Registry in processing documents, including Transports. The lawyers lamented delays in obtaining documents from GRA, which are relevant for the completion of legal transactions, including administration of estates and the quick access to Certificates of Registration and Compliance. The GRA staff, who was present, promised to address these issues, immediately.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
