It is with utter disbelief that I learnt that Sherod Duncan and Christopher Jones, Members of Parliament (MPs) for APNU+AFC, both of whom were tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and were advised to self-quarantine, presented themselves in the National Assembly and participated thereof, in vulgar defiance of copious directions on this matter from the Clerk of the National Assembly. This is the clearest exemplification of the sheer selfishness, recklessness, callousness and irresponsibility of persons presenting themselves as leaders.
By so doing, they have exposed their own political colleagues, the Government MPs, the Clerk, the Speaker, the staff of the National Assembly, the Press, the security personnel, the food caterers and indeed, all present at the Arthur Chung Convention Center, to this deadly virus. Additionally, were it not for parliamentary immunity, they may have committed criminal offences in the House by the violation of the COVID-19 Guidelines.
There is yet a larger picture, by this singular act, these two mavericks have clearly demonstrated that they are unconcerned, even about the health and safety of their own colleagues, thereby establishing, at least in my view, that they are incapable of representing the interest and welfare of any citizen.
APNU+AFC have simply wasted two valuable parliamentary seats. If this is the new style of representation that Joseph Harmon is speaking about, then once again APNU+AFC constituents would be getting a raw deal. They deserve better. Much Better!
