Guyanese seem to be the most vitriolic and indecently caustic group on social media. Thankfully this behavior does not reflect the majority of Guyanese but is significant to cause all sorts of issues and imbue a bad name. As we seek to unite and create togetherness we must find new ways of interacting that would eschew the vitriolic and indecently caustic traits and consequential output. We can argue and debate on the basis of values, principles and ethics, focusing on evidence and when necessary agree to disagree and then move on. In the process we must resist temptations to label, demonize, denigrate and insult and we must engage in language that that does not alienate, put down, rabble rouse and disrespect. This to is necessary in the new normal and the healing process.

Today reminds us that progress might be slow. It might take decades. But no matter what things might look like today, it’s always possible

Statement by Sir Shridath Ramphal:
As one who pleaded that we, Guyanese, “do not descend into the pit of lawlessness”, I applaud the Chairman of GECOM, Claudette Singh, for elevating the rule of law above all other considerations.
The CARICOM Report on the recount of the votes in the March 2nd general elections is more than a milestone in democracy in Guyana; it is a landmark in democratic ethics throughout CARICOM.
President Granger emphatically said that “CARICOM was the most legitimate interlocutor” in the Guyana electoral crisis. And he was right. So it is. As long ago as 2001, CARICOM Heads of Government (including Guyana’s)
“stressing that the Region had a long-standing tradition of respect for the will of the people expressed through free and fair elections on a regular basis”… “pledged to work together to maintain and strengthen the institution and processes essential to democratic Government”.

As we prepare to lead GUyana forward, let us recognize the sterling leadership of Bharat Jagdeo. The PPP won the 2020 elections the day the party elected BJ as it’s General Secretary. As GS he worked everyday and gave his all. From that day, the PPP began the journey to resist dictatorship, to reject corruption and incompetence and to put Guyana back on the road to prosperity. We won local government elections in 2016 and 2018, we won a No Confidence vote in 2018 and we mobilized the Guyanese people to reject Granger and APNU/AFC. The PPP won for many reasons but our win in March 2020 is a tribute to the indispensable leadership Bharat Jagdeo provided. He led from the front. Irfaan will be our President but he will be backed by the Champion of the Earth. Guyana is in good hands. Breathe again my sisters and brothers. Thank you BJ.
