It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and the rest of Lakers Nation believed bringing back Earvin "Magic" Johnson as president of basketball operations was the beginning of an era of sustained success. How could it not be? Everyone loves Magic. He’s the most celebrated player in franchise history, and he’s the face of the Los Angeles sports scene with his Lakers and Dodgers presence.

But so far, it’s been anything but "Showtime" at Staples Center. The sheer number of missteps, odd roster moves and free agent/trade whiffs have raised a serious question. Is it possible Johnson and the Lakers don’t know what they’re doing?

what the hell do they want....Magic to manufacture players who can beat the top teams?
it seems to me that the owners and the media want to win so badly that they are deliberately putting insane and unreasonable pressure on their management to do the impossible
Basketball is a team game. it can only be won in almost every case if you build a team from scratch. it may have happened once I think in which a bunch of superior players got together and and they played well enough as a team to overwhelm all other teams
that does not happen every day..in fact it does not happen at all. yet they have put so much pressure on Magic for example that he is trying to do the impossible and creating catastrophe.
Imagine Magic was trying to give away his whole dam team away for one player.. Anthony Davis.. destabilizing that team to such and extent does not care to play for him now that the players know what he was going to toss them all in effort to get Davis
Look at Masai Ujjiri with the Raps making a very stupid deal with the childishly selfish Kawhi Leonard, who is play only half the Raptors schedule, while trading away several parts of the team that brought the Raptors to this current level of glory.
the Raptors now have a collection of players..not a team..upwards of 80% of whom did not contribute to the Raptors rise. and yesterday they played like a collection of players not a team while the Orlando Magic played like a team and defeated the high prices raptor collection
Masai Ujjiri also wants to win unreasonably and quite probably has fucked up his Job in Toronto, because this collection he has assembled will not win the NBA and will have to be broken up by the end of the season.
at the end of this season Childish Leonard will leave for California and the Raptors will have to rebuild. the Raptors has retained some parts that can be cornerstones of a new team successful team. but 80% of the current Raptors collection will be gone by next season
the principles of winning at team sports remains the same..you must have a cohesive team with a sufficient level of talent and leadership and management who know how to use and develop that talent in the current conditions of the league in which they play. forget super stars...and going all to hell to recruit them. or almost forget them: if you can get one who fits your program at balanced cost then sure. but I would not sell the house for hem nor would I make deals with them that treat them like princes.
Ujjiris collection will fail, the Raptors senior management/ownership have surely seen that already and will likely fiyah Masai somewhere along the line

some kind of sanity has to be reintroduced into NBA management or that league will implode.
Greg Popovich in San Antone remains successful despite the fact that he got rid of Leonard. and watch as his team gels by next season he is threatening to win the NBA again.
that is because Popovich remains a sane consistent builder of his team the only way that can be done..getting talent and developing its individual abilities in a team setting relative to the way the game is played or is being played at the time
take a look a the most of the successful teams in the NBA this year:
the best team at the moment is Milwaukee with a star they built from scratch..Giannis Antetokoumpo. that kid is about the best player in the NBA right now..the leading MVP candidate. Giannis did nto cost the Bucks anything but rookie salary so far
Milwaukee is a real team built up from scratch. any adjustments they have made are veteran experience they have brought in at middle lower levels to help the team through an expected playoff run
then there are Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic...two teams that have suffered for years while building from scratch. they both have no name players but are increasingly successful in the league. at the moment the Raptors can barely beat them..and will not be able to do so by the end of this season
the Denver Nuggets is a similar team..built from scratch, successful and is another team, full of no name players. this current Raptors team will never defeat again Denver again. in fact if the Raptors keep this same team into next season they will not be able to defeat any of the teams I have listed and about 5 or six more who are developing, improving as we speak
building through the draft and calculated and smart signings is the way to go. there are gems in the rough who fail at some teams because they do not know how to manage the kids. those kids like Markelle Fultz are steals indeed. get those guys for songs, then work out their problems and unleash them on the league.
Magic has some nice young players with the Lakers...such as Ball kid,Kuzma and Ingram. Magic shud allow those kids to mature with leBron. Magic shud aim to be successful at the draft coming up to add to his store of talent to be guided by LeBron. and in this way the Lakers will have a competitive team in a couple of years..Lebrons last 2 seasons or so
seriously the Lakers cannot win faster than it is possible to do so..unless they have unlimited amounts of money to pay 4-5 stars and NBA rules allow them to pay such money..after all there are salary caps. then of course the Lakers must get these stars to play as a team..which would take the right coach who can pussy foot among the stars, go gently in their midst to massage their egos, to get them to play good basketball.
in fact it was a mistake for Magic to go get LeBron. he went to the Lakers management under the wrong impetus..that as magic Johnson he could attract stars to sign with the Lakers. that's the NBA insanity right there..to attract stars..Instant winning.
all of that is a waste of time to me...expensive time too..the most crazy of approaches. I mean even the Golden State Warriors began in the regular and proper sane way. we saw then Dubs on the way up, a bunch of raw kids being molded by Mark Jackson..a collection handed to Steve Kerr for final polishing into an NBA champion team
all of that is a waste of time to me...expensive time too
