Ereck Flowers’ time with the New York Giants is about to end.
The team will release Flowers, the franchise’s 2015 first round pick, if general manager Dave Gettleman is unable to trade him by Tuesday at 4 p.m., a source confirmed to NorthJersey.com and USA TODAY Network New Jersey.
ESPN initially reported the news of Flowers’ imminent departure from the Giants, who benched him after two games as their starting right tackle in favor of 2017 undrafted free agent Chad Wheeler.
The 24-year-old Flowers apparently did what he could under new coach Pat Shurmur to be a good teammate and show he wants to be part of the solution, once he reported to the team after skipping a significant portion of the voluntary offseason workout program.
But he wasn’t — unfortunately his play reinforced he was part of the problem, and that was evident from the first offensive play of the season when he was reduced to trying to trip Jaguars star defensive end Calais Campbell after being beaten badly to the inside.
“I think it’s just kind of run its course,” Shurmur said. “We appreciate Ereck’s efforts, and we just wish him the best. Sometimes a change of scenery is good for a person, and we’re just hopeful he can go out and continue to have a good career.”
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
