It’s good that Starbucks, with its announcement this week that it will close thousands of stores for a day of “racial bias training” in May, is taking steps in the right direction after a video of two black men getting arrested in one of its coffee shops went viral. But white America’s habit of needlessly calling the police on black people is not just a Starbucks culture problem. It’s an American culture problem.

For many people of colour in the U.S. — who are disproportionately affected by poverty — Starbucks is unattainable, at least on a daily basis. It's an insider's club at best

many people pop in and out of Starbucks to use the washroom, and many people sit there without buying anything. And they don't get arrested for it.

That’s right. A little over an hour after he scored 27 points against the Boston Celtics, a little over a mile from where his tip-in with five seconds left breathed life back into the Bucks, Antetokounmpo wanted some tacos. Only, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a manager informed him that they were too busy to find him a seat right away. After waiting some time, Giannis left, taco-less.
