While lunar images have proven that the American flags planted during the Apollo missions are still standing on the moon, lunar scientists have now said that they probably no longer hold the iconic stars and stripes — radiation from the sun most likely bleached out all the colors. The result? The flags are probably completely white by now. The flags were made by Annin Flagmakers. They are nylon and cost NASA $5.50 each. Even on the surface of the Earth, under the protection of our atmosphere, flags flown in bright sunlight would fade severely over the decades since the moon landings. Because the moon doesn't have an atmosphere, and there is no shade, the flags planted by the Apollo astronauts

So I guess now they are french flags??? (Bad joke, sorry, I couldn't help it)
Well that should be a good reason for NASA to go up there and place something more resilliently coloured. It would be a nice reason to go back since no one has set foot there since 72'.

Shame that piece of history couldn't be properly preserved. But fighting against the erosion of time is a lost battle. Still, the bleached flag is a reminder that human race was able to travel beyond earth atmosphere. There's not any more reasons to even send humans to Space again, robots will take our place.
