he New Amsterdam Township celebrates its 120th anniversary with Town Clerk Angelina Collins calling on citizens to fulfil their obligations, so that the municipality could be a place their offspring could be proud of.
The utterance came during a prayer- breakfast held at the historical Town Hall, where Mayor Claude Henry, along with his recently appointed Deputy Harold Dabydeen, were amongst the many citizens in attendance.
Collins recounting the mounting criticisms thrown at the municipality said ‘criticism allows us to change our course in order to have a better township. ‘
‘To realize a place where we will be proud of , we will have to continue to contribute to the rich history so that our grandchildren can continue to do same , and be proud.’
‘We know , we have not been able to provide the level of services, the citizens expect , but we are trying’, Collins reiterated .
Alluding to the fact that despite challenges the Council was able to acquire several pieces of machinery including an excavator, a loader, amongst others which were donated by organizations and individuals.
In a plea for more assistance, Collins said the council will accept anything even if ‘it’s a cutlass or file’.
Expressions of gratitude were extended to the regional administration for its intervention which allowed the town to be fitted with street lights, improved roadways, desilting of its canals and improving the sea defence.
Assistance was also received from the Organisation Council of Friends of the Municipality, which intervention has resulted in the computerization of the various departments , allowing information to be accessible ‘at the click of a mouse’.
Remarking briefly on the Town Hall Tower restoration, the Town Clerk said the committee ‘is not active as we would like it to be, but we are asking, seeking and knocking at the doors of many including the government for their assistance.â€
Even as she informed the gathering of the Council’s achievements, she pleaded with the citizenry not to go backwards by dumping garbage into the drains, nor withholding their taxes or paying the requisite building fees.
