Quote:In essence, Modi has dumped into the Arabian Sea India’s archaic foreign-policy doctrine of ‘hedging’ between the US and China:

The first thing is that we no longer live in a bipolar world. The world is interconnected and interdependent. You will have to connect with everybody at the same time. Even if there are two opposing countries, they will have to be friends. Now the times have changed.

He conveys a sound understanding of world politics, and he presents a pragmatic foreign policy that meets the needs of the transformation of India, sensitive to “the future of our 125 crore people”.
Now, compared to September 2014, when Modi was an ‘innocent abroad’ in the jungles of Raisina Hill, today he is in command. Our supine bureaucracy and the hangers-on with the establishment and ruling circles ought to see the writing on the wall. But then, given the dismal record of the past year and more, it is prudent to keep fingers crossed.
Who is the ‘real’ Modi? That is the question.
The point is, nothing less than a cultural revolution can force Indian elites to shed their ‘unipolar predicament’, which is felt in their blood and felt along their heart — and Modi may be unequal to the task of leading such a revolution even if he wishes to.
