It is a cruel blow for a bowler who made an immediate impact when he was introduced to international cricket at the start of last season, taking 10 wickets in four Ashes Tests.
Wood, 26, has a long history of injury problems but hoped the most serious and long-standing of them would be solved by an operation after he had been forced to leave England’s tour of the United Arab Emirates in November.
Now Wood is set to have keyhole surgery later this week which will rule him out of England’s three-Test series against Sri Lanka that begins on May 19 but might enable him to challenge for a place later this summer against Pakistan.

This is really disheartening news as I have been impressed with Wood's progress over the last 12-months. He has real potential. He bowls at serious pace and gets good movement. Unfortunately, he has been hampered by injuries throughout his fledgling career and I do worry about his future. He has quite a violent delivery, especially on his foot front. If you watch his action, you will see that his front leg crashes down hard and straight into the pitch. I fear that ankle injuries and stress fractures may well continue to hamper his career unless he finds a way to lessen the stress and impact on his front foot.
