It's the start of the holiest time of the year for Catholics around the world and the borough.

Churchgoers are gathering all around the Bronx this Ash Wednesday, including at the Church of the Holy Cross in Soundview.

Catholics are receiving a marking on their foreheads that signifies the beginning of the holy season for believers of Lent.

I prefer the original Egyptian form of the celebrations.

Where I am from all Christians celebrate this day as being significant not just Catholics. It is indeed a day of gathering for them, all church doors are open today and some will have extra special ceremonies today to signify the onset of Lent. Absolutely no meat for them today.
