Three people having one baby :Genetics part XVI

MPs have voted in favour of the creation of babies with :

DNA from two women and one man. [/size]  8

The UK is now set to become the first country to introduce laws :

to allow the creation of babies from three people.

A further vote is required in the House of Lords.

IF everything goes ahead then the first such baby could be born next year. 

The fertility technique aims to help women at risk of passing on serious and often
life-threatening genetic diseases through their DNA.

The problem occurs when a woman carries defective DNA in a microscopic part of their
cells called mitochondria.

Only a tiny fraction of the DNA passed down to a child comes from the mitochondria,
it can be enough to produce deadly disease.

The technique under debate allows scientists to replace this specific DNA :

with genetic material from a donor woman with properly functioning mitochondria.  8)
