The Value Of Chanderpaul

Have we been too hard on Chanderpaul at times considering the service he has given to WI cricket?

Quote:Chanderpaul's scores in the just concluded series were 85*, 84*, and 101*, his 30th Test hundred, made from 134 deliveries, strike rate 75.37. There was a marked increase in his scoring rate as West Indies raced towards the declaration, indicating, though we all should already know, that he is able press on the gas when he wants to.

Soon, the Caribbean cricketers will be taking on India, and after that South Africa. I am willing to wager that the mostly green batsmen in the West Indies team will rest easier, knowing that among them is the game's most difficult batsman to separate from his wicket. Come February 2015 the World Cup will be held in Australia and New Zealand, and although Chanderpaul has not been in the 50-over team for a while, the West Indies could do worse than take him on the trip.

Zac,

What is the source?

I agree Windies could do worse than select Shiv for the WC.

* If over the past 2 decades the West Indies had one more batsman like Chanderpaul, a batsman who values his wicket and is hell-bent not to give his wicket away cheaply, the WI team would have been more successful.

People can be very ungrateful and seem to have short memory. Chanderpaul has stood out for the West Indies in numerous matches and has saved them from further embarrassment by adding stability to an often feeble batting lineup. Chnderpaul has also been a slow scorer so the recent comments about his batting style may be the effect of t20 on some people's idea of batting even in test matches.ย
