The Rockefeller family, whose legendary fortune was built by John D. Rockefeller through Standard Oil, announced that its $860 million philanthropic foundation is joining the divestment movement and abandoning fossil fuels. The announcement comes just ahead of the United Nations climate-change summit that starts Tuesday in New York City, and is part of a broadening divestment initiative in which people commit to selling shares of energy stocks. The Rockefeller Brothers Fund has already eliminated investments involving coal and tar sands, while increasing its investment in alternative energy sources, the fund’s president said. Unwinding other investments in a complex portfolio involving a broader range of fossil fuels will take longer, he noted.

Sierra Leone’s three-day curfew designed to contain the Ebola virus in the country has ended, with authorities declaring it a huge success and saying it will not be extended. The lockdown began Friday morning and confined most of the nation’s 6 million inhabitants to their homes while about 30,000 medical volunteers went to affected neighborhoods to find and treat patients and distribute soap. Authorities said they discovered 22 new cases, which they said would have increased transmission if not found. The curfew was the most aggresive measure in West Africa so far against Ebola. In hardest-hit Liberia, meanwhile, the number of beds for Ebola patients has quadrupled.

So the charity is selling off all it's fossil-fuel investments.  Big deal.  (I notice that none of the actual Rockefellers said anything about getting rid of their PERSONAL holdings.)
